Work Port Jervis is a free, independent community employment resource connecting local residents, employers, training opportunities, and workforce support.
It began with a simple question:
*How do we build a local economy in which residents have enough purchasing power to shop local in the first place?*
Having a job does not always mean having meaningful disposable income. Housing, transportation, food, healthcare, utilities, and heating can consume most of what a lower-wage household earns.
That affects more than the individual worker. When residents have little money left after necessities, they have less to spend at local restaurants, stores, entertainment venues, and service businesses.
A healthier local economy depends on a healthier cycle:
*Better local jobs → stronger household income → more local spending → healthier businesses → more and better jobs.*
Shop local—and hire local
Shopping local supports a local business.
Hiring local supports a local household.
*Both strengthen the same community.*
Work Port Jervis does not ask businesses to hire someone simply because they live nearby. Employers need qualified, dependable workers, and Port Jervis is part of a larger tri-state labor market.
Our goal is encouragement, not mandates: make it easier for employers to find qualified local applicants and easier for residents to find sustainable employment close to home.

That information can help residents, employers, entrepreneurs, schools, workforce organizations, and community leaders better understand what Port Jervis actually needs.
Work Port Jervis is independent, community-focused, and nonpartisan. It welcomes participation from local employers, residents, the City, the CDA, business organizations, schools, training providers, and Orange County workforce agencies.
“Shop Local” may be only half of the equation.
Work Port Jervis is an effort to strengthen the other half—helping local residents find better opportunities, helping employers find local talent, and building a stronger community from both directions.
